When the sun comes out from behind the clouds here in New Zealand, we always take that as an invitation to get outside and enjoy the sunshine as well as all of that fresh air. In order to be able to be comfortable outside, many New Zealand homeowners will have some decking installed so that they can spend time outdoors, cooking, drinking and just generally having fun. As with anything that we have built outside, the elements can take their toll on your decking and so it’s going to take some effort on your part to keep it clean and to make sure that it lasts.
If you don’t take proper care of your deck boards then they will start to fade in colour and deterioration will set in. There are many things that want to damage your brand-new decking like mildew and certain insects and so it pays to maintain it year-round so that you can get to enjoy it properly and for longer. We all lead very busy lifestyles and so it is difficult putting aside time to take care of it but thankfully we can rely on deck cleaning services at ECS. It is their job to come out to your property and get your decking looking brand-new again and to provide it with the added protection that it needs.
There are a number of things that you can do by yourself to ensure that your decking lasts longer and the following are just some of those.
- Carry out checks yourself – You may not be a decking expert but we all know how to spot issues if the wood is starting to decay and rot away. It doesn’t take a trained eye to spot something like this and so whenever you have any free time, have a look around your decking to see if anything needs attention.
- Try to keep it clean – This is a lot easier said than done because we experience quite a lot of inclement weather here in New Zealand and so remembering to sweep off the old leaves and removing dirt and grease from your decking can be quite difficult. Take the time to sweep it clean once in a while and it will last you a lot longer.
- Try to avoid fading – If you have some decking furniture then it is important to move this around from time to time so that your decking doesn’t experience fading in areas. If you move your barbecue set from one side to the other or your decking sofa a little bit to the left or right then your decking will look a lot better.
When you do invite friends and family around for a barbecue, make sure that you wipe up any grease, food or drinks that are spilt as soon as possible so that permanent staining cannot occur. With a little bit of effort on your part, there is no reason to think that your decking won’t last you many more years and provide you with lots more fun.
