Interior Door Hardware: How to Make a Smart Choice

Adler CulverBy Adler CulverJanuary 31, 2019No Comments3 Mins Read

You and the people who live with you in your house may notice interior door hardware when it malfunctions or doesn’t suit the style of your home. Choosing interior door hardware properly is important to improve your home’s overall design and last for many years with optimal functionality and performance.

When you go to the market, you will have to choose from a variety of interior door hardware that seems to appeal to you. But select interior door hardware which suits your tastes and needs. If you are in the market to buy new door handles, the tips below can help you make a smart decision:

Think about the Style and Function of the Door

Is your door hanging on standard hinges or swinging on a pivot? Bathrooms and closets are often installed with interior pocket doors which disappear into walls. The handles for these doors must work with their style without hitting any adjacent hardware or fixtures.

Decide on which Door Trim Appeals to You

Interior door hardware varies. You can choose minimalist fixtures which focus almost entirely on function or go for more ornate hardware that boasts plates and intricate inlaid patterns. Also, choose between round door knobs and straight handles. You may want to choose simple-to-use handles if you have young children or elderly family members who may find it hard to grasp around doorknobs.

Determine if you Need a Lock

Locking doors are commonly installed in bathrooms and bedrooms and a lot of hardware fixtures work with a universal flathead key which can be used to open the lock from the outside. If you want greater security for your home, consider getting handles with keyed locks. Also, you can benefit from push button lock systems.

Decide on the Color

Door handles play a significant role in improving the door’s functionality and look. Think about mixing and matching colors and adding contrast to interiors. Regardless of the shape and size, the doorknobs must boast the same color. If you want to achieve a contemporary feel, choose hardware that is made up of nickel, stainless steel, and brass.

Ensure the Finish Matches your Home’s Overall Design

You don’t want to choose interior door hardware that does not coordinate with the features in your home such as lighting fixtures. Also, do not pick a finish in a vacuum. Consider the other design elements in your house and coordinate the door hardware finish with them.

Keep it Simple

This tip can work is appropriate. For instance, home features such as laundry rooms, closets, and pantries might not need strike plate and latching hardware. Simple pulls and spring closure mechanisms will already work just as well for them. In case you don’t really have to close and latch a door in your home, go for simpler door hardware.

Consider Other Door Accessories

Usually, interior doors are located in a way to butt up against fixtures and walls. To limit how far your door can be opened, use matching door stops, holders, and springs. This can also protect other furniture and fixtures.
